The Long Ones Vol 2 by Paul Mallatratt
Around this time two years ago, I wrote and released an album called (for want of a better title) The Long Ones, in response to a comment from my son Miles (see the notes for that album for more detail). He is two years older, so am I, but we both still like long ones that don't do much. So over the last few months I have found myself immersed from time to time in musical ideas that refuse to be squeezed into a five minute track, or even a ten minute track. When this happens I just have to go with the flow - there's no point fighting it.
Unlike the original album, not all the tracks on this album are the kind of music that sends you to sleep. They are certainly written to allow your mind to wander though.
It's Not What You Think is a tale of two halves. I won't spoil things, except to say I had the great pleasure of seeing one of my favourite bands (Carbon Based Lifeforms) playing live recently, which had the effect of changing the second half of this track. The first half is my attempt at inserting a little Frippertronics into the proceedings.
The Day It Rained is more in the vein of the original album. The rain was recorded at my home in April 2024, when our guttering started leaking. You can't pass up an opportunity like that.
Come Back Later is more of an instruction to myself than a descriptive title. The beach sounds were recorded on a beautiful warm afternoon in Cornwall, unedited and complete with children playing and other background sounds. It also features heavily processed wind chimes and bells to give a sense of a warm summer breeze. We have, and will continue to, come back later as we love the place.
